I started following the line of Mary's father, William Johnson and found it fascinating. You may know all this already, but I found him again in 1880 as a
single man (probably widowed) with several small children (also attaching this image). He probably married Tomacita within the year of that census. Men
back then had to do something quickly to keep their families together. Some people like to throw stones at men who would lose their wife and then hop right to a new wife. They had to have someone to help raise the kids while they were scratching out a living. With William, that appears to be just what he did, scratch out a living. He was a gold miner. I tracked him back another 10 years and he was still in New Mexico and living in a boarding house with no apparent family ties. He was listed a William S.F. Johnson at that time. I then lucked out and found a Civil War Pension record of William S. Johnson and his wife was listed as something like Lomacita. I'm relatively sure that this is supposed to be Tomacita. He was down as having served in a California Cavalry unit. I then went to Calif. in 1860, Eureka, Nevada Co. and found a lone gold miner name William S. Johnson, thence back to the middle fork of the American River in Eldorado Co., Calif. in 1850 to find a William S.Johnson. His age was the same in all except the 1850 listed him as 20, only a slight deviation.

this is a work in progress....but thought i would send what details i have so far thanks Michele
